Glock has released several pistols in recent years, however the Glock 19x and Glock 45 are at the top of the radar for most people.
Glock 45 vs. Glock 19x
The Glock 45 and the Glock 19x are very similar and both released in a one year period in 2018. Both of these pistols feature a full size Glock 17 frame, but with a shorter Glock 19 slide. So the hot topic of debate is what makes these handguns different and is one really better than the other?
First lets start with why the Glock 19x came to market to begin with….
Last year the United States Army held a open competition for companies to design the next handgun for the U.S. Army contract. Glock designed and entered the Glock 19 MHS (modular handgun system) into the competition in hopes of winning the HUGE contract. To make a long story short, Sig Sauers 320 MHS won out in the competition and the U.S. Army now carries Sig 320’s and not the Glock 19.
The good news for all of us is that Glock took all that work they put into designing the pistol for the U.S. Army, and released it in a civilian version. The Glock 19x ( civilian version of the Glock 19 MHS ) was born and Glock fans went nuts trying to get there hands on these pistols. Glock changed a few things on the 19x including getting rid of the manual safety the army wanted. The company knew that there loyal customers would not want the manual safety. Glock has been know for its reliability and simplicity and the manual safety would hinder what many love about these pistols.
So how is the Glock 45 different or better?
In my opinion, both are great pistols however they have different applications. I believe the Glock 45 is better designed for Police and Law Enforcement and thats the target audience for the new Glock 45. I mean lets face it, neither of these handguns are designed for concealed carry. That does not mean it couldn’t be done, or that they wouldn’t work for a concealed carry weapon. It just simply means that these “service size” handguns are way better suited for law enforcement and duty weapons.
The Glock 45 has a few noticeable differences including the obvious color, front slide serration, and does not have the lanyard loop like the Glock 19x. Law Enforcement has been eyeballing the Glock 19x since it was released in early 2018. However, it was missing a few features which made it hard to close the gap on leaving the trusty Glock 17’s.
. The first was obviously the color of the firearm. Law Enforcement was not looking for the “stylish coyote brown”, and would want the classic black handgun
. Glock 45 has a beveled and flared magazine well, which police like for fast and easy reloading
. Biggest and most noticeable change, the front slide serrations. These serrations can allow you to rack your slide with one hand if you are ever in a bad situation.
So which one should you buy?
The Glock 45 is the clear winner in my opinion, as the Glock 19x has no advantages over the Glock 45. That being said, the Glock 19x is a great pistol that I personally own and love. However if the two pistols were laying side by side, I would pick the Glock 45 every time.
